Less choice

Just read a great post called Outsourcing Choice, over at 37signals’ blog, about how too much choice can lead to “analysis paralysis” and actually prevent people from being productive.
“Options seem like a nice idea. But each one adds up. Once you realize the evil impact they can have, you start to look at them differently.”
Maybe it’s time to look at those Festival Builder screens again and ask ourselves if we really need all those options.

I’ve found out the hard way that this is true with my online marketing campaigns, if the landing page presents too many choices, my conversion rate plummets. If i have one clear simple instruction, conversions rise, it would seem that people like (or just respond to) being told what to do.
I think it’s a slightly different kettle of fish when we’re talking about ‘playing a game’ or ‘expressing yourself’ in the context of building a festival, but it may well be that the same rule applies and some people will want it as ‘plinky plonky’ as possible
